Both pieces inspired by the photography of John Hartgerink, and made as part of a challenge using John's photographs of Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge. I just finished two quilts for a Metamorphosis, New Quilts From Old Favorites challenge, but I can't post them yet!

Quilt the Swamp 2009: Focus in the Swamp-New Photos

Quilt the Swamp, an annual fiber show, opened at Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge on January 13 and runs through February 8. many of the artists are members of the Contemporary Fiber Artists of Louisiana. The show was curated by Michael Young of Baton Rouge. This year's theme is "Focus in the Swamp." Each piece was inspired by a photograph by John Hartgerink, a local photographer who has taken hundreds of (wonderful) photographs in the Bluebonnet Swamp. Each piece was hung with the corresponding photo.

Braving the Elements

These quilts are 17 x 22 and were submitted to Journal Quilts: Elements. Since I knew that only one at most could be chosen, I designed them to also fit the theme of the Bluebonnet Swamp show coming up in January. As it turns out, neither of them were selected for the Journal Quilt show, but do appear in an online show "Braving the Elements," a sort of Salon de Refuse, if you will. Both are based on photography by John Hartgerink (this year's swamp theme) and will hang in Baton Rouge from mid-January to mid-February, 2009.

Busy, Busy, Busy, but not much (I can) show for it

The past six weeks or so have been very busy. I have made three quilts during this time.

Can't show these 17" x 22" journal quilts, but here are the parts I cut off. Top piece is stamped, fused, thread accented, embroidered on organza, painted, and heavily quilted with metallic thread. Bottom piece is painted, appliqueed, thread accented, fused, overlaid, and quilted with metallic thread. Pictures of the actual items to appear in late October. Some may appear a bit sooner. Both have nature themes. Doesn't this make you want to see them?

This was the first finished, and is 48" x 48," which is pretty large for me. Can't show it yet, so here are some of the leftover bits. It's pieced, fused and heavily quilted, and also has a nature theme.

Sneak Peek

This will be going to the Breaking Traditions show when it is finished. It was done with Setacolor paints and paintsticks over a maple leaf rubbing plate.

Here are two small detail glimpses of possible journal quilts for 2008. The upper one has painted batik fabric with leaves from batik fabric and leaf shadows of netting and MistyFuse.
The lower one is a batik stamped with Setacolor and Lumiere paints. Can't show you the whole thing until the Houston show opens in October. Any that do not go to Houston will be going to the Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge next January.
